We abandon our brothers
kiss good-bye our parents - with delight
leave the sun behind
and make sure we know we're right

we grow up to be righteous fools
but we don't grow up to be strong
we hide under the hemlines
of our teachers all along

we disregard our elders
and smile down at our young
the only prophet we believe in
holds a gun

we stand blindfolded by our lovers
and cannot wait to blind someone
but when we outcrawl the sleeper's covers
our legless army has marched on.

we chew down on the grass
of many pastures over time
and we're swallowing too fast
to ever feel just fed and fine

we long for the royal saviors
of our lonely peasant souls
and by the time they've found us
we bemoan our loss of goals

we repeat all our mistakes
till they feel right in our hearts
or resurface on our graves
in our nightmare epitaphs

we teach our little brothers
there are defenses to be built
they'll learn to lock out others
they'll learn to lock away the guilt

we put our children down as traitors
so they'll grow up just like us
with a repertoire of past endeavors
the comprehension of an infant
and a heart of glass.

we're out of time to make concessions
so we ask life to smile for us
but we can't wipe away those grim expressions
even if it does.

and despite the years we're undergoing
we don't change, we just feel worn
we never live to our liking
and we pray to be reborn.
